Invited by Black Church Print Studio to curate an exhibition based on the word ‘circulation’, McAree has focused on ideas around modes of ‘production’ and ‘distribution’. Expressing an interest in works which demonstrate an economy of means, using easily available and cheap means of production – leaflets, photocopies, posters, printmaking, flyers, collage – the show will look at and subvert an approach to looking at social or political issues, while at the same time displaying an awareness of the modes of display and exhibition making.
In a curatorial twist, and echoing the very nature of the theme, no work in the open submission process will be refused and every proposed work will be displayed, even if it is the actual proposal itself. The exhibition on the one hand makes explicit the diverse responses to the brief, and on the other, the democracy (or lack thereof) of the curatorial selection process.
The exhibition will also feature invited artists Alan Butler (IE), Jeffrey Charles Henry Peacock (UK) and writer Mark Hutchinson (UK), whose work will be used as a framing device, weaving a thread throughout the overall exhibition.
A print-to-order publication documenting the process and the exhibition will be created, solely funded by the open submission fees. This publication will feature work created specifically for the publication by the invited artists, together with selected open submission artists.
Circulation is the third in a series of exhibitions, presented by Black Church Print Studio, that laterally relate to processes of printmaking. It follows on from Production curated by Kate Strain in August 2012, and Repetition curated by Margaret O’Brien, with Niamh Ann Kelly in January 2013.
