The Year of the Flood is an exhibition based on a 2009 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. ·The book focuses on a small community of survivors of a biological catastrophe referred to as the ‘waterless flood’. ·In this alternative reality, human rituals are reconfigured, creating situations that are not so much fantastical as eerily familiar. Strange hybrid beasts such as wolvogs, pigoons and rakunks roam freely on Atwood’s pages, placed within an overflow of intensified philosophic and ideological bases. The heat gets turned up. The habits of the mind are exhausted by all the possibilities that can be liberally consumed.
Taking such a construct as a point of departure, The Year of the Flood exhibition develops a kinship with Atwood’s writing, acting as a speculative forecast of a world that runs parallel to our own.
